ATTO ExpressPro-Tools and ExpressRAID Important Notes
ExpressPro-Tools and ExpressRAID requirements
PCI based Power Macintosh System 7.5.2 or later.
Will recognize any device on any SCSI Manager 4.3 compatible SCSI bus
Optimized for use on ATTO's line of ExpressPCI SCSI-3 Accelerator cards
Drivers support any hard drive, disk array, or removable cartridge drive.
Does not provide drivers for CD-ROM drives, CD writers, or tape drives
ExpressPro-Tools and ExpressRAID Installation
Upon installation, ExpressPro-Tools create a folder named ATTO, and installs ExpressPro-Tools and updaters for the ExpressPCI and ExpressPCI-ProSeries SCSI-3 Accelerators. It will also install the •ExpressPro-Tools Extension in the Extensions Folder of your System Folder. The ExpressRAID Installer will do the same things and will remove the ExpressStripe Extension, if installed, replacing it with the •ExpressRAID Extension.
Updating from ExpressStripe 3.x
Users of ATTO Technology's ExpressStripe 3.5 or later can upgrade their PCI based Macintosh to ExpressRAID without re-creating their arrays. When ExpressRAID is installed, the ExpressStripe extension is replaced with the new ExpressRAID Extension. This extension must be present for the continued operation of pre-existing ExpressStripe arrays.
Installing the ExpressRAID or ExpressPro-Tools driver
Software controlled RAID arrays not created with ExpressRAID, whether created with ExpressStripe or another RAID package, should not have their drivers updated with ExpressRAID or ExpressPro-Tools. Due to differences in RAID volume formats, using the Install Driver Option from ExpressPro-Tools or ExpressRAID on an existing Non-ExpressRAID array will result in the array no longer being useable, until it is re-created from scratch. These drivers may be installed on single drive HFS partitions without any problem.
Truevision Targa Video Capture Users
For optimum performance, users of Truevision's Targa line of video capture products should upgrade their Targa control panel to version 1.62 or later. Using previous versions of the Targa Control Panel with ExpressRAID or ExpressPro-Tools will not produce the desired data rates.
Features changed since the manual was printed
- Erase Defect List option not available
When low-level formatting a hard drive, the Erase Defect List option mentioned in the ExpressRAID and ExpressPro-Tools manual has been removed. Drives which support erasing of the defect list in their firmware will do so when the Low-level format command is issued.
- LUN Support, hide/show LUNs
Due to unpredictable support of Logical Unit Numbers (LUN's) on SCSI buses other than ATTO Technology's ExpressPCI cards, the ExpressRAID and ExpressPro-Tools drivers will only support LUN's for devices attached to an ExpressPCI card. For this reason, devices at LUN addresses are only displayed when attached to an ExpressPCI card. If you wish to view devices at LUN's on other buses, choose View LUNs on All Buses from the Options Menu of ExpressRAID or ExpressPro-Tools. The ExpressRAID or ExpressPro-Tools Extension is necessary to support devices at LUN's using an ExpressRAID or ExpressPro-Tools driver.
